HOJA SANTA

Herb | hoja santa

USDA Zones: 8-10

Piper auritum Discover the unique and irreplaceable flavor of Hoja Santa, a versatile and aromatic herb cherished in the traditional cuisines of central and southern Mexico. Also known as yerba santa, Mexican pepperleaf, or the root beer plant, this lush, heart-shaped leaf brings a rich, multi-layered taste to a wide range of savory dishes. When used fresh, Hoja Santa serves as an excellent wrapping for tamales, meats, and cheeses, releasing its signature aroma as it cooks. While the dried leaves can still be used in cooking, they become brittle and lose much of their bold character. Its flavor profile is a delicate balance of pepper, anise, eucalyptus, nutmeg, mint, tarragon, and a bold hit of sassafras—the note that gives it its "root beer" nickname. Add a touch of the "sacred leaf" to your garden and elevate your meals with a flavor that’s truly one of a kind. Hardy in zones 8-10.

Hoja Santa plants start shipping mid-May in 4-inch pots. Order early for best availability. Available only within the contiguous US.

Growing Tips & Guides

Get Started

Initial Instructions
Upon receiving and carefully unpacking, water as needed and allow the plant a few days to gradually acclimate before planting. Work compost into the planting bed and dig a hole just deep enough for the root ball. Loosen the soil around the sides of the hole, set the plant, and backfill. Add a 2–3 inch layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture.

Cultivation
Choose a site protected from winter winds and frost pockets. Consider planting in a contained area, such as a large pot or galvanized tub, to manage spreading rhizomes.
Note: This plant is considered invasive in Florida.

Size at Maturity
6+ feet tall x 4-10 feet wide

Spacing
3-5 feet apart

Hardiness
Herbaceous perennial in zones 8–9. Apply a thick organic mulch in fall to protect the roots. Evergreen shrub or small tree in zones 10–11; overwinter indoors in lower zones.

Bloom Time
From mid to late summer through fall, pencil-thin spikes up to 6 inches long appear, bearing tiny white flowers.
