USDA Zones: 3-10

Apios americana A beautiful and fascinating native vine found throughout the deciduous forests of the eastern United States, from southern Canada to Florida and west to Colorado. This vigorous, twining perennial can reach up to 18 feet long, forming lush foliage ideal for natural screens, trellises, and fences. In mid to late summer, it produces fragrant clusters of dusty reddish-brown to deep mauve, pea-like flowers followed by long decorative pods—adding both charm and seasonal interest to the garden while drawing in pollinators. Highly valued for its ornamental and ecological benefits, Apios americana enriches the soil through nitrogen fixation and provides lasting beauty. Hardy in zones 3–10.
Though the plant’s underground tubers were historically eaten by Indigenous peoples and early settlers, we do not recommend them for casual consumption, as they may cause gastrointestinal discomfort if improperly prepared. Anyone interested in their edible use should carefully research cooking methods and safety considerations.

Groundnut plants start shipping in May in 4-inch pots. Order early for best availability. Available only within the contiguous US.

Growing Tips & Guides

Get Started

Initial Instructions
Upon receiving and carefully unpacking, water as needed and allow the plant a few days to gradually acclimate to full sun before planting out. Prepare a hole enriched with compost or other organic matter.

Cultivation
American groundnut prefers a moist summer location in the understory. In the wild, it thrives along creek banks, climbing understory trees and reaching into dappled light. Once established, the vine will naturalize for years with little care. It can also be grown ornamentally in a walled area to drape over or on a support to climb.

Size at Maturity
This vigorous, twining perennial vine can reach up to 18 feet long.

Spacing
12-18 inches apart

Hardiness
USDA Zones: 3-10.

Bloom Time
Mid to late summer.

Bearing Age
Tubers take 2–3 years to reach maturity, after which they can be harvested annually. Please note: Though the plant’s underground tubers were historically eaten by Indigenous peoples and early settlers, we do not recommend them for casual consumption, as they may cause gastrointestinal discomfort if improperly prepared. Anyone interested in their edible use should carefully research cooking methods and safety considerations.
