Product Description:

Zanthoxylum piperitum Grow in a container on the patio or in your herb garden for plucking fresh, flavorful leaves! This spice producing seedling is a tropical looking deciduous shrub or small tree native to Japan and Korea yet hardy to US zone 6. The aromatic leaves have a complex citrus and pepper flavor leaving a slight tingling on the palate and can be harvested and used fresh or dried in rice dishes, with fish or any Asian style cooking. The serrated, pinnate leaves are glossy and attractive, taking on color throughout the growing season. The woody bark has thorns and an upright habit. A member of the Rutaceae family with a wide distribution, known for its cultural uses in food and traditional medicinal properties in part to its strong biological activities. After flowering and successful pollination, the Sansho pepper will produce clusters of small fruits that are aromatic and can be eaten as a spice fresh or dried similar to a Sichuan pepper. Cluster in multiples for optimal pollination or with other Sichuan type pepper plants.

Arrived well packaged and healthy plant. Unfortunately, one of my plants died. Customer Service was awesome. Will plant to reorder when the plant is available again

Sansho Pepper Plant

Received alive and well packaged. The plant is thriving. Hopefully, next year it will produce sansho pepper corn, since I planted it about 15 feet from Sechuan Pepper plant. I am very pleased with my order.

Lovely and healthy!

This came looking beautiful and healthy a little over a month ago. I was very impressed with how well the live plant shipped. It’s established well and seems hardy!

Initial Instructions
After unpacking, allow the plant a few days to gradually acclimate to full exposure. If you are keeping your Sansho Pepper in a container, re-pot it into any size container. If planting in the ground, select a location with well-drained soil, dappled light, and adequate moisture.

Cultivation
This plant will do well in a container or in the ground in a protected location. Being an understory tree in its native environment, it prefers dappled light, morning light and not direct sun that may scorch its leaves. While hardy, it is a tender perennial until well established, so afford it some protection and if in a pot, bring it into the greenhouse if winters are extreme. Cluster with other Sancho or Szechuan varieties for optimal pollination. These plants are dioecious meaning they are male and female plants. They do not come pre-sexed and must flower to determine if they have anthers or stamen by closely inspecting the flower.

Soil Type
Typical garden soil or potting mix. Prefers well drained soil, allow to dry out between watering.
