Growing Tips & Guides

Get Started

Initial Instructions Upon receiving and carefully unpacking, water as needed and allow the plant to acclimate to full sun before planting out. Prepare a hole enriched with compost or other organic matter.

Cultivation Water deeply once a week to establish a deep root system. Water more frequently during hot, dry spells. After harvest, deep water 1–2 times per month. Drought tolerant once established, but regular watering during fruit development will improve yields.

Size at Maturity 8–12 feet tall and wide. Slow growing, though growth becomes more moderate with proper water and fertility.

Pollination Self-fertile, though plants will produce heavier crops with another variety planted nearby. May require hand pollination if bee activity is low. The flower sepals are edible and sweet.

Pests & Diseases Not generally bothered by pests or disease.

Light Requirements Full sun to part shade (4–6+ hours daily).

Soil Type Slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soil. Waterlogged soil may lead to root rot.

Hardiness USDA Zones 7–10. Use 3–4 inches of organic mulch for winter protection.

Bearing Age 2–3 years.

Bloom / Ripening Time / Yield Showy red and white flowers bloom in late spring to early summer (July in some regions). Fruit ripens in November. Expect yields of 5–10 pounds per plant.

Harvest Instructions / Storage Fruit often drops when fully ripe; check the ground every 1–2 days. Store fruit in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
