75 days. Scarlet Emperor sets fat, slightly fuzzy pods with a richer, more savory flavor than snap beans. Though the 6–8 inch, plump, juicy pods are less uniform than some varieties, the taste of Scarlet Emperor is as sweet as a bean gets. Borne on impressive 8–10 foot tall plants, sprays of beautiful scarlet-orange flowers are the showiest of all the varieties we’ve trialed. Mottled black/ purple seeds; 20 per ounce.

fruitful scarlet runner beans

I live in northern Utah, where July and August can be hot before cooling by September. As noted, plant blooms abundantly but few fruits in the hot summer. As noted, hummingbirds are keen to visit these flowers (which, unlike common beans, offer substantial nectar). when our weather cooled and hummers found the vines, fruit set shot up to nearly 50% in my garden. I am setting up to confirm these observations with pollination experiments and hummers this coming summer. BTW, my attempts at hand-pollinating these irregular flowers fell short of the hummers' abilities! The curly-cue pistil would seem to need 3 hands to pollinate (unlike regular beans, which auto-pollinate anyway)

No beans

I've got these planted in two spots and had no issues growing vines, but harvested 2 (yes, two) beans. I have tons of pollinators and keep pests in check with beneficials and neem. My soil gets a compost update every year (and everything else grew like gangbusters) so it's a head scratcher. Very disappointing since it's the only pole bean I planted this year.

So sorry to hear that! Scarlet runner beans can be reluctant to produce pods if temperatures are excessively high. Could this be a possibility?

Pretty flowers, no beans

My Scarlett Emperor shot up beautifully with strong stalks and hearty leaves right on time. Its flowers were truly exciting to see, and then without warning, there were simply no beans produced. I have other beans nearby (Royal Burgundy) that also had lovely flowers and produced a heavy crop.

In a sad state I spoke with a gardening friend who also planted Territorial Scarlett Emperor purchased from a different source than mine. Theres is also a closely tendered garden, and unfortunately her plants performed just as mine did - no fruit.

Be warned-It was very sad to glow with anticipation and then be disappointed. I also question if there is a missing pollinator in this series?

Scarlet runner beans can be reluctant to produce pods if temperatures are excessively high. They should continue to produce flowers, and should set fruit when the weather moderates. If temperature isn't an issue, insect/hummingbird activity (or lack thereof) could also be a cause. Although the flowers are self-fertile, they do require insect or other pollinator assistance to move the pollen. You may want to try hand-pollinating some blooms. Otherwise, it sounds like your conditions are good for the plants--they're healthy and not over-fertilized, which would cause lush foliage but no blooms/fruit. Let us know how they progress! Rich and flavorful beans are fiber-packed veggies that promote digestive health and are excellent sources of antioxidants that scavenge free radicals in the body. They are also nitrogen-fixing legumes; beans gather nitrogen from the air and load it into the soil to feed future crops.

Days to maturity are calculated from date of direct seeding.

Culture
• Beans are shallow rooted and can require up to 1/4 inch of water a day during hot weather
• Optimum soil pH is 5.5-6.5, mildly acidic
• Apply 1 cup of TSC's Complete fertilizer per 10 row feet, and 1 inch of compost

Direct Sowing
• One ounce of seed plants 12-15 row feet, 1/2 pound for 100 row feet
• Grow Pole, Runner, and Yard Long beans on trellises
