LADY DI

LADY DI

Product Description:

Climbing 10 feet tall, Lady Di's plants burst into lipstick-red blooms that attract swarms of hummingbirds. Its textured pods are tender and completely stringless. We enjoyed them at 6–7 inches long although, even at 10–12 inches, they maintain their high quality texture and flavor. Lady Di produces early pods and develops seeds at a leisurely pace, which means a long harvest window. Mottled black/red seeds; 36 per ounce.

Tall, Delicious, Abundant, and a Pollinator Favorite

I live in Western Washington - and while many plants struggled during last year's growing season, these beans kept on giving! I planted them late due to the cold spring (early July), and they kept producing until mid-November. I grew 4 bean varieties this year - Seychelle, Sunshine, and Dragon Langerie (not from Territorial, but the Territorial's Dragon Tongue beans look comparable), and Lady Di. The latter two beans were by far my favorite - they both produced beans that were over 5 inches long and 1 inch across with amazing flavor. The Lady Di beans are slightly fuzzy on the outside, but when cooked this texture goes away. I would highly recommend this bean variety for anyone who lives in the temperate zone of the PNW - delicious, and the pollinators (of course, hummingbirds!) love them too.

Some interesting things to note about this bean - The seeds themselves are at least twice as large as other beans - so when you plant this variety, it will not hurt to plant them a little deeper in the ground. You should also be prepared for them to climb over six feet tall - I set up a trellis system so that once they reached that height, they could also climb laterally if they needed to. And they grow RAPIDLY - so have this trellis set up before planting. The beans did take about a month to emerge even though the plants were very tall by that point, but then kept producing beans for over 3 months. Such a cool bean to watch grow.

These beans are prolific but late

These beans have hung out in the garden most of the summer. Hummingbirds loves them. The produced beans moderately until the first week in October. They are now on hyperdrive. I am loaded with beans and there is no sign of stopping. I live in E. Mass.

Disappointment

Only 8 seeds germinated and they look pitiful. One has red blooms, no beans. Yes, I amend soil and fertilize. Everything else flourishes.

Rich and flavorful beans are fiber-packed veggies that promote digestive health and are excellent sources of antioxidants that scavenge free radicals in the body. They are also nitrogen-fixing legumes; beans gather nitrogen from the air and load it into the soil to feed future crops.

Days to maturity are calculated from date of direct seeding.

Culture
• Beans are shallow rooted and can require up to 1/4 inch of water a day during hot weather
• Optimum soil pH is 5.5-6.5, mildly acidic
• Apply 1 cup of TSC's Complete fertilizer per 10 row feet, and 1 inch of compost

Direct Sowing

• Grow Pole, Runner, and Yard Long beans on trellises

Insects & Diseases
• Common insects: Mexican bean beetles, bean weevils, cucumber beetles, spider mites
