Plant tulips October through November. They require at least 5–6 hours of sun a day and prefer a well-drained, humus-rich soil. Dig the bed deeply, add a little bone meal and/or bulb fertilizer and plant 5 inches apart and 4 inches deep. For maximum results, when the shoots come up, side dress with more bulb fertilizer, and don’t forget to water tulips regularly during their growth and blooming stages. Plant shallow rooted annuals around the tulips to hide the dying foliage at the end of the blooming season.
