Hellebores can be enjoyed on the porch in a decorative pot during their blooming period, then planted in the ground later in spring when conditions are better for planting. These evergreen perennials thrive in cooler months and prefer shade with an acidic, organic layer such as wood chips or leaf mulch. They do best in a moist, shady environment alongside ferns and other hellebores.

Initial Instructions
Keep the plant in its existing pot while it’s flowering and place it outside where it can be enjoyed. Plant in the ground at any point in spring.

Planting
Choose a shady spot that doesn’t receive too much afternoon sun. Dig a hole as deep as the roots, then loosen the soil another 2–3 inches.

Remove the plant from its pot and gently loosen the roots. Place it into the hole, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Apply mulch and keep the plant well-watered through its first season and during dry spells while it becomes established.

Cultivation
Plants tend to go dormant in summer and reemerge in fall and winter, with evergreen foliage. Once established, hellebores require little care. Water during the first year, then enjoy for years to come. Apply mulch in fall and remove any dead leaves.

Spacing
Space plants 18-24 inches apart. Hellebores tend to do well in clusters.

Partial shade to full shade
