RED TORCH

RED TORCH

Product Description:

60 days. This eye-popping tomato has superb flavor to match its stunning appearance. The 2 inch long, fiery red fruit are streaked with yellow and pointed like a flame. Big enough for 2 bites, Red Torch provides lots of great snacking early in the season and through to frost. The indeterminate vines shrug off challenging growing conditions and keep the harvests coming.

Surprising!

This smaller tomato looks like no other. Shaped like a Christmas tree light bulb, it sports a "flame" pattern and is treasured in my family for its sweet taste. No need to slice it; it is a perfect mouthful of flavor. The plant yield is generous and does not seem to have any culture problems.

The best tasting tomato so far.

I have grown Juliet Grape tomatoes for many years now and each year I add one or two new tomato varieties to try out. I plant all of my tomato seeds about April 10th so I can put the plants in my garden around May 15th. July 6th, I picked my first Red Torch tomato and it by far bypassed the flavor of my Juliet tomatoes. Everyone I gave a Red Torch to for tasting loved them also. A full tomato flavor. I will definitely plant them again next year and I will also try the Bronze and Sunset Torch tomatoes as well. My plants grew higher than my 5' cages and spread out about 6' in diameter. The plants are loaded with fruit also.

Disappointed

This plant has not grown hardly at all, it is very sparse of leaves and only about 2' high.

BEST ever taste in a small tomnato

I always used a blend of tomatoes from my garden for my sauces, ketchup etc until I grew Red Torch. Literally over the summer we harvested hundreds, sometimes 25 a day every few days from one plant. The flavor was so rich this was the only tomato I used for my ketchup last year. They are small, I wash & squeeze out the seeds but cook the whole tomato (skin & all) along with other seasonings, celery, onion etc. I use a hand blender to turn the whole kettle full into a creamy product right before canning. This ketchup is so thick you use a spoon to serve it.

Days to maturity are calculated from date of transplant.

Culture
Determinate tomatoes: grow compactly, sprawling laterally, usually do not require staking, and fruit ripens over a short period of time
Indeterminate tomatoes: grow on long vines, generally require pruning to 1 or 2 leaders that need to be trellised
• Fertile, well-drained raised beds covered with plastic mulch promote early growth and better yields
• Tomatoes are high feeders and will benefit from regular fertilization with Age Old Bloom
• To prevent blossom end rot use a high calcium amendment
• Overwatering can cause fruit to crack

Direct Sowing
• Not recommended

Transplanting
• Sow seeds in trays 6-8 weeks before anticipated transplant date; up-pot into 3-4 inch pots when the first set of true leaves appears
• Strong light and cooler temperatures (60-70°F) prevent plants from getting leggy
• Fertilize with Age Old Grow every 10-14 days
• When transplanting work in compost, 1/2 cup of TSC's Complete fertilizer, and handful of bone meal
• Determinates can be spaced 18-24 inches apart, indeterminates 24-36 inches apart
• Tomatoes can be buried up to the top 2 sets of leaves
• Use Kozy-Coats or Victorian Bell Cloches to protect young plants

Insects & Diseases
Common insects: Flea beetles and tomato hornworms
Insect control: Pyrethrin or row cover for flea beetles, and Monterey B.t. for tomato hornworms
Common diseases: Early and late blight
Disease prevention: A strict 3-4 year rotation, remove vines at the end of the year, fungicide

Harvest & Storage
• Harvest when fully ripe, do not refrigerate for best flavor
• Green fruit should be ripened in a cool, dark area; make sure fruit are not touching
