Product Description:

Perilla frutescens 65-70 days. Known by many names including Shiso and Beefsteak, this member of the mint family is widely used in Asian cuisine. Perilla's subtle and complex, herby flavor has hints of citrus, anise, basil, and spices. A very versatile crop, use the leaves in salads, stir-fries, sushi, and pickling. Seeds can be slow to germinate, so you may want to soak the seeds for 24 hours before planting. Sow shallowly or cover lightly, as light is needed for germination. May also require a period of cold stratification for successful germination if sowing earlier in the season. Approximately 225 seeds per ¼ gram.

Really struggling to get it to germinate

I've tried multiple times, indoors, in two different brands of starting mix, with a grow light, and have only succeeded in getting ONE seed to germinate.

Everything else I purchased has come up fine, whether started indoors or direct-sown.

Poor Germination

I planted 3 rows of seeds outside on 4/20/24 and only a couple of plants came up as of 5/22/24.. I then planted more seeds in a starter tray and kept in a cold frame. After almost 3 weeks, no seeds have germinated. In past years, once the plants started, they did very well. Not sure what happened here.

Don't plant near hay fields

This is a wonderful herb with a cinnamon-y flavor, and it's beautiful in the garden. You can plant it outside the fence because the deer won't eat it. And that's because it causes pulmonary edema in ruminants: horses, cows, sheep, goats and deer. So keep it contained. Shiso has become a serious problem in the south, causing mysterious illnesses in livestock. In upstate New York, the green variety self-seeds. The red, not so much. Plus, you can see the red to relocate it in case it does escape. This herb needs stratification. Start indoors for large plants.

Culture
• Gourmet greens perform best when planted in early spring or fall
• Most will tolerate light to moderate frosts with minimal cover• Plants are most vigorous and the flavors are better when daytime air temperatures are between 60-70°F
• Most greens are best direct sown
• Apply 1 cup of TSC's Complete fertilizer per 10 row feet, and 1 inch of compost
• Cover seeds with Reemay or Grow Guard 20 to help deter birds and improve germination
• Sow greens every couple of weeks to ensure a continuous supply of young plants

Direct Sowing
• Use row cover to improve germination and prevent soil crusting
• Thin as soon as 2-3 true leaves have formed

Transplanting
• Start indoors 4-6 weeks before anticipated transplant date

Insects & Diseases
• Common insects: Aphids and flea beetles
• Insect control: Strong spray of water, or applications of Pyrethrin or Neem oil
• Disease prevention: 3-4 year crop rotation, and proper plant spacing allows air circulation to prevent molds

Harvest & Storage
• Harvest greens frequently and when young
• As with all greens, a rinse in cold water will help preserve the flavor and texture
