WINE CAP

WINE CAP

Product Description:

(Outdoors) Stropharia rugoso annulata Meaty Wine Caps emerge with a rounded, cabernet-colored cap and develop to an enormous size—up to a foot in diameter—earning them the nickname Garden Giant! We enjoy them when they're young and tender, but the larger size fruit are excellent on the grill. Culture of these marvels is relatively simple, as they thrive in a variety of media including hardwood chips, leaf litter, grass clippings and straw. Locate them in the garden among leafy veggies or rows of corn, this variety breaks down the mulch and makes vital nutrients available to the neighboring crops. Wine Caps produce each spring and summer for up to 3 years, and you can also transplant established mycelium into fresh mulch in new garden areas.

Mushroom kits are wonderful gifts to give and receive. Wine Caps are a garden companion and grow along side of your veggie crops. The best time to start a Wine Cap crop is spring or early fall when the outdoor temperatures are between 55-75° F. One Wine Cap kit will inoculate a 4' x 4' area. Our grow kits are a colony of wine cap mushroom mycelium growing on a mixture of hardwood sawdust, grain and water. Complete instructions included with every order. Mushroom kits ship at the time the order is placed and should be started within one week of receipt. Available only within the contiguous US.

Awesome mushrooms

I first purchased (originally Garden Giant mushrooms) from Territorial back in 2009. I planted them in woodchips (chipped untreated lumber recycled from demolished housing) along the garden walkway and covered them in 2 to 3 inches of peetmoss. They like getting stepped on and they kept moist next to the veggies. I recall collecting nearly 10 pounds of mushrooms with the first flush and 10 more over the next 2 flushes, and the garden turned into a jungle with the symbiotic assist from these mushrooms. Two seasons later, they were not available for order, so I had to order directly from Fungi Perfecti. Now I'm back to gardening and Fungi Perfecti no longer does direct sales of the King Stropharia "wine cap" mushrooms. I'm hoping that the current unavailability from Territorial is temporary, because I want to order some this season. They are awesome, for both their symbiotic support and for flavorful meaty mushrooms. And they are easy to grow. They just need non-aromatic wood chips and sawdust as the base substrate (for best results), and water. They grow best in the garden.
Some research needs to be done on these for their antibiotic production as well, because I'm almost certain that the mushroom patch that I placed under my long suffering pear tree cured it of the blight.

Here in Southeast Mississippi we got some extreme cold with lows in the 20's so I waited until the cold passed. I planted them about a month ago and removed a little of the peat moss I covered them with and the mycellium is starting to spread. I am very pleased with the wine caps.

Mycelium but no go

It started growing mycelium and i kept feeding but it never fruit. So sad. I kept trying for over a year and one day it just died out and the mycelium disappeared. Id like to try again but 35$ is a lot. I was really bummed out.
