CHAMPAGNE

Product Description:

Ribes rubrum Champagne is a truly prized and exquisite pink currant. With its remarkable, elongated clusters of large, rosy-pink berries, it’s a stunning standout! A very heavy producer, particularly thriving in the Pacific Northwest, and is excellent for fresh eating. The compact, woody shrub reaches 3-5 feet and blooms in early spring followed by fruit in mid to late summer. Great for containers, self-fertile and hardy in zones 3-8.

Ships FREE! Plants are available for a limited time, will be up to 10 inches and ship bareroot by early February. Order early for best availability. Available only within the contiguous US. Currant plants are not available to ME. Other items in cart may incur shipping cost.

When I received notification in January that the currant would be shipping soon, I immediately contacted Territorial Seed to let them know the ground here in Michigan (zone 6b) was frozen solid. I was told to plant it in a pot and keep it indoors until the ground was no longer frozen. I did as instructed. The plant never came to life. Wasted of $32.

So sorry to hear that! It can take a while for them to come out of dormancy, especially that first year while still getting established. I planted mine in February and it just recently started to leaf out at the very end of May. As always, our products are backed by our full guarantee. We want you, our customers, to be 100% satisfied with the seed, plants and supplies that you purchase from us. If anything you buy from Territorial proves to be unsatisfactory, we will either replace the item (if available) or refund the purchase price, whichever you prefer (for up to 1 year from purchase). You can also reach out to us for any troubleshooting, we'd be happy to help! Contact our customer service (Monday-Friday 8AM-5PM Pacific Time) at either 800-626-0866 or info@territorialseed.com

Didn't survive

I received my bareroot currant, immediately planted it in a pot, and placed in my green house for supplemental heat and frost protection. We stay quite cold here in eastern WA until our frost date the end of April which is why I had planned to always keep my currant in the greenhouse. The bareroot never took and showed no growth. Finally this last weekend after having it planted for almost two months, I dug down around the base to see if the root system was doing anything. No viability unfortunately and from the look of the roots which appeared hollow, I don't know if it ever had a chance. Territorial has always been good so I'm chalking it up to just an odd mishap.

February shipping isn't always practical

I absolutely love pink and white currants, and I was very excited to find both a white and a pink variety at Territorial seeds. Sadly, neither of the plants I ordered survived. February is an unpredictable month, but is generally the coldest (or seems to be!) where I live. The bare root bushes arrived during a prolonged cold spell --- sub-zero temperatures interspersed with occasional warmer temps kept the ground frozen solid. I tried to keep them alive rolled in moist newspaper in our unheated but not super-cold garage. I finally potted them up to try to save them, but ...they are still dead. I'll try again next time they are available, but I will pot them up immediately until temperatures make planting feasible.

Initial Instructions
After unpacking your Cherry Red currant, allow the plant a few days to gradually acclimate to full exposure. If you are keeping your Cherry Red currant in a container, re-pot it into the desired pot. If planting in the ground, select a location with well-drained soil, spacing the plants 3 feet apart.

For all other currants, upon arrival the shrubs will be bareroot and dormant. Moisten them slightly with some regular water and place in a cool damp area until ready to plant outdoors. It’s best to plant the currants while still dormant and space them 2-4 feet apart.

Cultivation
Water regularly during the first growing season. Fertilize lightly early in the season with a well-balanced fertilizer. Mulch well in autumn to protect the roots.
