General
Callas are easy-care, free-flowering and elegant specimen plants. In Zones 8 and above, the bulbs can be planted throughout the spring. In Zones 7 and below, they should be planted outside after the danger of frost has passed. For an earlier start, plant them indoors in a pot using a standard potting soil. Water well and keep the pot in a sunny window. Place outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Plant bulbs horizontally with the growing points facing upwards. Callas are happy in garden beds or large containers. For zones colder than 8, the entire container can be overwintered in a protected, frost-free location rather than digging the bulbs at the end of the season.
Spacing
Plant bulbs 3-4 inches below the soil surface and space them approximately 6-9 inches apart.
Soil Requirements
Callas prefer a rich, well-drained soil.
Light Requirements
Plant in full sun to part shade. In regions with hot summers, plant in an area with protection from the afternoon sun.
Fertilization Requirements
For best results, fertilize monthly with an all-purpose fertilizer while the plants are in bloom.
End of Season Care
In Zones 8 and above, callas can be left in the ground. Leave the foliage on the plants to help nourish the bulbs. In colder climates, dig the bulbs before the first frost and let them air dry for several days. Store bulbs in peat moss in a cool location.
