COLOSSAL

Product Description:

Castanea sativa x Castanea crenata This long-lived symbol of strength and the autumn season is truly the giving tree. A highly productive seed-bearing giant aptly named Colossal for its high yield of very large, shiny round nuts. This superior variety typically produces three chestnuts per spiny pod, yielding 11-15 per pound and up to 100 pounds per tree at maturity. These can be dried and ground into nutritious flour or roasted and peeled to eat. Chestnuts can be used to impart their sweet, creamy flavor to soups and sauces.

This European and Japanese hybrid is on grafted rootstock, reaching heights up to 30 feet, and withstands temperatures down to -20˚F. The trees flower from mid-June to early July. Male flowers have large panicles of showy white nectar rich flowers that attract hummingbirds and pollinators of all kinds. These long fuzzy creamy white flowers are fragrant and pollen producing while the female flowers have ornamentally interesting spiky flower structures which will become fruit bearing in the third year once pollinated, ripening in the fall. Zones 4-9. We recommend at least 2 trees for optimal chestnut production.
