Initial Instructions
After unpacking, remove and recycle the cardboard packaging. Choose a location for your tree that is away from heat sources such as wood stoves and radiators. The best way to water is to lift the pot from the wrapper, water the tree at the sink, then return it to the decorative wrap after the excess water has drained away. Do not allow the pot to sit in water inside the decorative cover. Indoors, we’ve found that the Lemon Cypress tends to dry out quickly especially in bright light and low humidity.
Cultivation
Indoors, Lemon Cypress should be close to a window where it will receive at least 6-8 hours a day of direct sun. Plants prefer cooler temperatures of 55-65°F. Water when potting mix is dry to the touch. Be sure not to over water, which can lead to problems with root rot. Fertilize just once a year using a balanced all-purpose fertilizer. If you live in Zone 7 or warmer, you can grow it outdoors year-round. If you wish to keep it in a container, repot every 4 years, using a fast-draining soil mixture. To plant in the ground, choose a site that is protected from cold, harsh winds. Although it prefers full sun, it can tolerate some light shade. This slow-growing dwarf cultivar will grow to 6-8 feet in 10 years with a width of just 1-2 feet, having a narrow columnar habit. Prune lightly if needed in spring to maintain its shape.
Pests & Diseases
In hot, dry regions Lemon Cypress may be susceptible to coryneum canker, a fungal disease. Prune and destroy affected branches.
