GOLDEN GATE

GOLDEN GATE

Product Description:

66 days. Usher in the pole bean season with this amazingly productive Romano. Large, flattened, sunny yellow pods are set off nicely by the vigorous, dark green plants, making it easy to see the handfuls of beans. The pods are tasty and stringless even when they’re mature at almost 10 inches long and 1 inch wide. White seeds; 65 per ounce.

Excellent flavor - poor germination

This bean is sweet yet still has the yummy meaty flavor of a Roma pole bean. The bean itself is 5 stars. However, I am very disappointed in the germination. I planted most of a packet and only a few came up. The rest I decided to trial by planting indoors under controlled conditions. So far only 2 of 6 have come up. I ordered more seed because the beans are so dang good but am hoping for better germination this time around.

An Excellent Pole Bean

I grew a large number of pole beans on trial this year and the yellow beans won hands down. This one was very early, and today I was able to pick yet another batch of fresh beans. Only the very earliest beans were able to produce this last crop, and I was quite surprised to see them this late. In case anyone is interested, the other yellow beans I enjoyed were 'Marvel of Venice, 'Monte Gusto:, and 'Sunshine wax'. The best green one was 'Northeaster'.

All were good beans, but this one was tops for me.

My favorite!

Prolific, tender, uncomplaining, pest-free. Very pleased with their performance all the way until the end of the season!
I ate them raw much of the time, as a snack. Gave them away - used in stir-fry, scrambles, etc...They were grown on a 7' metal trip-pod, full sun in my front yard. Also on the trip-pod were Red Noodle and Sunshine. The Sunshine were very prolific although they seemed to get tough if I couldn't pick them young, as the season progressed towards Fall. The Red Noodle, unfortunately were plagued by ants/aphids from the get-go so did not perform to their potential.

Rich and flavorful beans are fiber-packed veggies that promote digestive health and are excellent sources of antioxidants that scavenge free radicals in the body. They are also nitrogen-fixing legumes; beans gather nitrogen from the air and load it into the soil to feed future crops.

Days to maturity are calculated from date of direct seeding.

Culture
• Beans are shallow rooted and can require up to 1/4 inch of water a day during hot weather
• Optimum soil pH is 5.5-6.5, mildly acidic
• Apply 1 cup of TSC's Complete fertilizer per 10 row feet, and 1 inch of compost

Direct Sowing
• One ounce of seed plants 12-15 row feet, 1/2 pound for 100 row feet
• Grow Pole, Runner, and Yard Long beans on trellises

Insects & Diseases
• Common insects: Mexican bean beetles, bean weevils, cucumber beetles, spider mites
• Insect control: Pyrethrin
• Common diseases: See chart below
