BEST ever taste in a small tomnato

I always used a blend of tomatoes from my garden for my sauces, ketchup etc until I grew Red Torch. Literally over the summer we harvested hundreds, sometimes 25 a day every few days from one plant. The flavor was so rich this was the only tomato I used for my ketchup last year. They are small, I wash & squeeze out the seeds but cook the whole tomato (skin & all) along with other seasonings, celery, onion etc. I use a hand blender to turn the whole kettle full into a creamy product right before canning. This ketchup is so thick you use a spoon to serve it.

Hoping for More

I enjoy trying new tomato varieties to see if I can discover new favorites, but with the low productivity and flavor that did not impress, I will be trying something other than Red Torch to grow for a small, red tomato variety next year.

Note: this was grown in zone 9b and we had a cooler summer than usual which may have affected the productivity and/or flavor with this variety. By comparison though, the flavor of our Sungold tomatoes was consistently good despite the mild summer.

Not as good as bronze torch but good

I hope territorial reads reviews and sees that they should definitely be growing bronze torch as well as this. Bronze torch is sweeter and ripens earlier than this one. Also bronze torch is really delicious even before it's fully ripe, red torch needs to be really ripe before it tastes great. If I only had room for one tomato in my Seattle garden it would be bronze torch. ( but this one is good)

New Family Favorite

The PNW summer of 2022 was a La Nina year. Near constant cloud cover & low temperatures in to the early part of August. And then we dealt with forest fire haze from August to October.

I purchased this variety as a transplant and had it shipped the last week of April. I had purchased 11 other varieties (a mix of cherries, heirloom slicers, Romas, etc.)

The Red Torches took the cool, cloudy, hazy weather like a champ -- they were very productive with their vegetative growth and fruit set. The fruit was a little delayed with ripening but then so was everything else in the garden this year.

But once they did ripen... WOW!!!!

Absolutely wonderful taste and texture. Firm and meaty with a complexly sweet taste. They are superb.

We are halfway through October and they are still going strong -- there are still plenty of ripening fruit to be harvested. Or in my case, pilfered by my family and neighbors! lol

No issues with powdery mildew even though my nearby pumpkins are covered with it. No evidence of any fruit splitting.

100% am buying this variety again.

Culture
Determinate tomatoes: grow compactly, sprawling laterally, usually do not require staking, and fruit ripens over a short period of time
Indeterminate tomatoes: grow on long vines, generally require pruning to 1 or 2 leaders that need to be trellised
• Fertile, well-drained raised beds covered with plastic mulch promote early growth and better yields
• Tomatoes are high feeders and will benefit from regular fertilization with Age Old Bloom
• To prevent blossom end rot use a high calcium amendment
• Overwatering can cause fruit to crack

Direct Sowing
• Not recommended

Transplanting
• Sow seeds in trays 6-8 weeks before anticipated transplant date; up-pot into 3-4 inch pots when the first set of true leaves appears
• Strong light and cooler temperatures (60-70°F) prevent plants from getting leggy
• Fertilize with Age Old Grow every 10-14 days
• When transplanting work in compost, 1/2 cup of TSC's Complete fertilizer, and handful of bone meal
• Determinates can be spaced 18-24 inches apart, indeterminates 24-36 inches apart
• Tomatoes can be buried up to the top 2 sets of leaves
• Use Kozy-Coats or Victorian Bell Cloches to protect young plants

Insects & Diseases
Common insects: Flea beetles and tomato hornworms
Insect control: Pyrethrin or row cover for flea beetles, and Monterey B.t. for tomato hornworms
Common diseases: Early and late blight
Disease prevention: A strict 3-4 year rotation, remove vines at the end of the year, fungicide

Harvest & Storage
• Harvest when fully ripe, do not refrigerate for best flavor
• Green fruit should be ripened in a cool, dark area; make sure fruit are not touching
