LEMON VERBENA

Herb | lemon verbena

USDA Zones: 8-11

Aloysia triphylla Lemon Verbena is prized for its lemony scent and sweet, bitter-free flavor. Use the leaves and flower tops to flavor lemonade, teas, and desserts. The dried leaves retain their scent for years, a virtue that is indispensable for potpourri or culinary use. The plants will reward you with their enticing essence each season if protected from the cold and given plenty of water. Height: 4–5 feet. Hardy in zones 8–11, but can be grown as an annual elsewhere.

Growing Tips & Guides

Initial Instructions
Plant in spring after danger of frost has passed. Mix several inches of compost or organic matter into soil attimeof planting.

Cultivation
Lemon verbena can be grown outdoors in zones 8 and warmer. In colder climates, grow it in a pot and bring indoors over the winter, during which time it will lose its leaves. Ensure pot is at least 12” in diameter.

Plants will begin dropping leaves once temperatures dip below 40°F as they enter dormancy. Avoid overwatering dormant plants. If planted outside (zone 8+), reduce watering a few weeks prior to first frost. In colder areas, bring plants inside before temperatures dip below 40°F or allow a cold snap to cause plants to drop leaves, then bring indoors. Allowing the plant to remain outdoors until the leaves have dropped can reduce cleanup indoors and help reduce the likelihood of introducing insects to the home. Keep in a bright light area and water as needed to keep the soil moist but not wet. Decrease fertilizer frequency. Reacclimate to outdoor weather in the spring before placing outside full time.

Prune out dead branches in early spring, once branches have budded out before new growth emerges. Prune and harvest frequently throughout the season to encourage new growth and keep a nice form.
