Fruit/nut | jujube | specialty

USDA Zones: 5-10

Ziziphus jujuba Known for its sweet flavor, crisp texture, and rich history, the Jujube is an easy-to-grow tree that deserves space in your garden. Also called Chinese Date, Li produces egg-shaped fruit that’s larger than most jujubes, with a tiny, almost undetectable seed. The fruit ripens to a reddish-brown and offers a flavor reminiscent of a fresh apple—perfect for eating fresh or dried, and for making marmalades or juices. Jujube has long been valued for its nourishing and medicinal properties in winter soups and tea, which are gentle on the system. Li is self fertile but planting more than one tree will help boost yields. Jujube are thorny plants, though Li has fewer thorns than most varieties. The tree itself is as attractive as it is productive, featuring fine, lacy foliage and a profusion of small, fragrant white flowers in mid-summer. Hardy in Zones 5–10.

Jujube plants are 1 year old and start shipping the beginning of April in 4-inch pots. Order early for best availability. Available only within the contiguous US.

Growing Tips & Guides

Get Started

Initial Instructions
Upon receiving and carefully unpacking, water as needed and allow the plant a few days to gradually acclimate to full sun before planting out. Prepare a hole enriched with compost or other organic matter.

Cultivation
Partially self-fertile—plant two for cross-pollination and higher yields. Fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer in spring, but avoid over-fertilizing. Prune in late winter to remove dead or crossing branches and maintain an open canopy. Remove suckers using sharp tools like shears. Cut them flush or just below the soil surface to prevent regrowth.

Size at Maturity
8-10 feet, eventually 15-20 feet. Size can be managed with summer pruning.

Spacing
10-12 feet

Pollination
Li is self-fertile but planting more than one tree will help boost yields.

Hardiness
USDA Zones: 5-10. Young trees need winter protection (mulch) in zones 5-6.

Bearing Age
2-3 years
