Growing Tips & Guides

Get Started

Initial Instructions
Plant rhizomes upon arrival. Set them horizontally with the top of the rhizome at or just above the soil surface. Space 12 to 24 inches apart to promote good air circulation.

Cultivation
Water after planting and during extended dry spells. Once established, bearded irises are drought tolerant and prefer drier conditions. Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring and again after blooming. Avoid overfeeding. Remove spent flower stalks and yellowing leaves. Cut foliage back to 6 inches in late fall to reduce overwintering pests.

Pests & Diseases
Watch for iris borers, bacterial soft rot, and leaf spot. Good drainage and proper air circulation help prevent most problems.
