OLLA MEDIUM

OLLA MEDIUM

Product Description:

A simple, elegant, and effective solution to irrigation.
Save time, energy and water with these subterranean irrigation pots. Made of unglazed, low-temperature fired terra cotta and designed to be buried neck deep in the soil with crops planted around them. Fill the olla with water and the moisture is drawn out through the olla's porous walls as the plants require it. Ollas virtually eliminate wasteful runoff and evaporation that are inherent in surface irrigation, as well as weed growth. Each olla includes a protective lid.
Medium Olla: 1.5 quart/1.6 liter capacity, for 22–24 inch diameter planting area or container.

3 Simple steps to care for your ollas for winter:
1) At least 2 weeks prior to your first frost, make sure it is empty of water.
2) Make sure the lid is on, then cover it with straw and an inverted bucket for insulation and protection from moisture.
3) If your area is experiences heavy rains followed by freezing temperatures, we recommend digging the olla and storing it in a dry place.

It depends...

I've tried many watering systems and thought I would give these a try. I bought them to use in a large/tall raised bed, and planted seedlings around each olla according to the radius suggested.
The ollas definitely let water passively soak through - I bought mediums and they are 1/3 to 1/2 empty daily. However, I think my beds are just too large to rely on them. I've needed to supplement with a hose or watering can frequently.
I think they would be PERFECT for other container gardening - I'm going to move them to my assorted houseplants soon.

I’ve tried homemade with regular pots but these are sleeker and the tops much smaller than to cover a regular garden pot . The method of leaching water underneath the surface from the Olla’s permeable makeup is the smart way to water. I plan on getting the large ones also to broaden the circumference of the leached water that the roots take up. Nice to look at but they are to be buried in one’s garden.

I’m a believer!

Had always been curious about ollas. Do they work? Well after trying this medium olla I can honestly say Yes - they do. In fact it is a life saver for my container in our hot summer with few showers from mother nature. I plan on adding more in the future so I can increase my container garden.
