Be patient when starting

I purchased three varieties, Wonder, Green Globe and Imperial Star. I started 7 of each and had 18 of 21 sprout but at very different times. A couple came up after about a week After the first few came up I thought the rest were duds and contacted support to complain. They did respond right away and explained the germination time and requirement to me better so I waited patiently. Slowly they started sprouting but took about three weeks for everyone to break ground. They are coming along nicely.

So happy to have these

Great start and we already have buds on all of the plants. Good germination I planted inside in early March. Planted out early May in the Puget Sound area. Just hoping they winter over and produce again next year.

Artichoke failure

Out of thirty seeds, I got just three to germinate and then they died.

So sorry to hear that! We do germ test all of our seeds and to ensure we sell only top performing crops, we have established germination standards that are higher than prescribed by the Federal Seed Act. Our minimum germination standard for artichokes is 70% and the most recent test for this variety passed at 74%. As always, our products are backed by our full guarantee. We want you, our customers, to be 100% satisfied with the seed, plants and supplies that you purchase from us. If anything you buy from Territorial proves to be unsatisfactory, we will either replace the item (if available) or refund the purchase price, whichever you prefer (for up to 1 year from purchase). You can also reach out to us for any troubleshooting! Contact our customer service (Monday-Friday 8AM-5PM Pacific Time) at either 800-626-0866 or info@territorialseed.com

Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus The flower buds of the artichoke are the harvested part of the plant. Artichokes are reported to contain the highest level of antioxidants of all vegetables!

C. cardunculus Cardoon is a relative of the artichoke. Instead of consuming the flower as with artichokes, the fleshy leaf stems are eaten.

Days to maturity are calculated from date of transplant.

Culture
• Artichokes are a tender perennial that prefer mild winters and cool summers
• Deep, fertile, well-drained soils with a pH of 6.5-7.5 provide optimum growth
• Before a hard frost, cut plants to 8-10 inches above ground and mulch with clean straw to keep the crown from freezing; crown death may occur at 25°F or lower

Direct Sowing
• Not recommended

Transplanting
• Start indoors in February, sow 3-5 seeds per 4 inch pot; thin out weak or thorny seedlings and keep the strongest plant
• Transplant after danger of frost, but when the seedlings can still receive 10-12 days of temperatures under 50°F to induce budding
• Work in 1 cup of TSC's Complete fertilizer around each plant

Insects & Diseases
• Common insects: Aphids
• Insect control: Pyrethrin or Insecticidal Soap
• Common diseases: Crown rot, powdery mildew, molds
• Disease prevention: Avoid overhead irrigation and water-logged soil

Harvest & Storage
• Cut buds before they start to open
• Smaller artichokes are the most tender
• Cardoon can be harvested green or blanched white by wrapping the young stalks with newspaper or piling straw around the plants for 30 days prior to harvest
• Store at 36°F and 95% relative humidity
