Cucurbita pepo 105 days. Winter Luxury comfortably commandeered first place in our ‘pie class’ pumpkin taste-off for outstanding flavor and texture. The 6 pound beauties have thick, dense sweet flesh. The rounded fruit has orange skin that’s netted in a fine veil. In the field, the unusual skin texture gives this squash a rich, velvety appearance befitting of its name. Approximately 6 seeds per gram.

Amazingly delicious

We are now (late December) finishing our last Winter Luxury pumpkin. They store well and taste amazing. Easy to grow as well. This will be a feature of the garden going forward.

storage

I love (present tense) the flavor of these. Its mid january and i still have 4 left and the quality of them hasn't declined at all. I have a room with good temperature for storage, but i have not experienced problems with these keeping like others have. I plan to grow a bunch again this year. They were very productive, hardy and very good eating. Couldn't be happier.

Great pie pumpkin

We grew these for the first time this summer and we are hooked. They produced well and are delicious in pies. Very smooth flesh, we didn't even put through a mill as we usually have to do.

Disappointed

After reading the "first place" rating for pie class pumpkin, I was excited when these really produced a bumper crop. Yesterday I started baking them for freezing and immediately noticed that they didn't have the normal "pumpkinie" smell when I cut them open. Nice bright orange color but stringy like a jack-o-lantern pumpkin. Baked them anyway thinking that they'd still cook up well. After putting them through the "Squeezo" the texture was nice and smooth but the flavor was just blah. I froze 11 pints for dishes that have lots of seasoning but the other 4 trays of baked pumpkin went out to the deer, who did enjoy it. These didn't work for me, I will probably return to the tried & true Small Sugar Pumpkin.

Cucurbita spp. This traditional ornament of the autumn harvest is good for much more than jack-o-lanterns and pies. High in fiber and essential minerals, their colorful orange flesh signifies an abundance of the antioxidant beta-carotene.

Days to maturity are calculated from date of direct seeding.

Culture
• Pumpkins require uniform irrigation totaling 15-20 inches of water during the growing season
• Bee attractant flowers or beehives will help yields — misshapen or non-developing fruit is often the result of poor pollination

Direct Sowing
• Plant after frost danger when soil warms to 65°F
• Work in shovelful of compost and 1/2 cup TSC's Complete fertilizer into hill
• Keep soil evenly moist but not wet as too much moisture causes seed to rot
• Bush varieties: sow 3-4 feet apart
• Vining varieties: sow 4-5 feet apart

Transplanting
• Start indoors 3-4 weeks prior to anticipated transplant date in 4 inch pots
• Work in shovelful of compost and 1/2 cup TSC's Complete fertilizer into hill
• Transplant carefully as to not disturb roots

Pests & Diseases
• Common pests: Cucumber beetles and squash bugs, stink bugs
• Pest control: Pyrethrin
• Common diseases: Various wilts, leaf spots mildews, and various viral diseases
• Disease prevention: 3-4 year crop rotation, and fungicide applications

Harvest & Storage
• Leave on vine until fully mature, rinds should be firm
• Pumpkins can tolerate a light frost, but must be protected from a hard frost
• Dry gourds: Wash gently in a solution of 10 parts water and 1 part bleach, carefully removing all dirt, then store in a warm, dry location
• Store at 55-70°F and 70% relative humidity
