Gynostemma pentaphyllum Jiaogulan, often called the "Immortality Herb," is a vigorous climbing vine long valued in traditional Chinese herbal medicine. A member of the cucumber family, it features glossy, compound leaves on long trailing stems. The foliage is commonly brewed into a naturally sweet, pleasant-tasting tea and contains an impressive concentration of ginseng-like saponins, making it a popular adaptogenic herb valued for its antioxidant and immune-supporting properties. This versatile vine is well suited to garden beds, containers, and hanging baskets, where its lush growth creates an attractive display. Hardy to zone 8.

Growing Tips & Guides

Get Started

Initial Instructions
Upon receiving the plant, carefully unpack it, water as needed, and allow it a few days to gradually acclimate to light before planting out. Prepare a planting hole enriched with compost or other organic matter. Alternatively, pot it up immediately as a houseplant. Jiaogulan appreciates a deep pot and may dry out too quickly in a shallow one.

Cultivation
Jiaogulan flourishes in warm, humid conditions and benefits from occasional misting when grown indoors. Water every 3–5 days, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy, as plants do not tolerate drying out. Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced organic fertilizer. Protect plants from temperature extremes and prolonged drought, which can reduce leaf quality.

Size at Maturity
Outdoors, Jiaogulan can grow vigorously, reaching up to 20 feet in length. As a houseplant, it can be kept at 2–4 feet with regular pruning.

Pests & Diseases
Generally resistant to pests and diseases, but keep an eye out for aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Outdoors, plants may occasionally be troubled by beetles and slugs; control these pests with diatomaceous earth.
