TURMERIC

Herb | turmeric

USDA Zone: 9

Curcuma longa Rich in historical, culinary, ornamental, and therapeutic value, these golden yellow-fleshed roots are a key ingredient in curry blends and make a beautiful, saffron-hued fabric dye. This ginger relative is native to the tropics and thrives in a warm, moist environment. The plant forms upright stalks of lush, broad foliage and, given a long enough growing season, will reward you with exotic, white flowers. Keep warm—at least 65°F— well watered and in the brightest sun available. The roots will be ready to harvest at the end of the growing season. Hardy in zones 9 and above.

Growing Tips & Guides

Get Started

Initial Instructions
Use nutrient-rich, well-draining soil amended with compost and organic matter. Plant outdoors when soil temperatures are above 55 degrees F and daytime temps are consistently at least 70F. Keep the plant watered, but do not allow it to become waterlogged. Maintain a warm environment after planting. If growing in pots, plants should be at least 12” wide and 12” deep.

Fertilizer
Feed regularly throughout the season using a side dressing of compost or a slow-release fertilizer. Turmeric is a heavy feeder, and yield is heavily dependent on nutrients received throughout the season. Compost tea or diluted liquid fertilizer work well, too.

Cultivation
Turmeric plants can be grown in pots indoors. If the indoor air is especially dry, plants may need to be misted periodically.
Protect plants from the hot afternoon sun, especially in hotter climates.

When leaves begin to yellow, the plant has entered a state of dormancy. In warmer climates, trim off the yellow foliage. In colder climates, harvest before the first fall frost. If overwintering, bring the pot indoors before the first frost. Keep in an area with minimal light. Water infrequently throughout the dormant season. Trim off the stems at the soil line and store pots in a location between 50 and 60°F. Roots can also be removed from the soil and stored in vermiculite or sawdust until spring; mist sparingly to prevent them from drying out.
