CINDERELLA (ROUGE VIF D’ETAMPES)

Product Description:

Cucurbita maxima 110 days. This centuries-old French heirloom pumpkin looks just like the coach in the fairytale Cinderella. Always nice pumpkins

I wish we had better weather this year. We had a few of these that survived a flood. People love these.

Cindarella couldn't do better! Zone 9b, Northern California

I bought these seeds for my home garden and started a few for myself and friends using heat mats and grow lights. The seeds all germinated and the seedlings were healthy and pretty. I transplanted my seedlings into my home garden about two weeks ago. So far, the vines look great! They're sturdy, healthy and green. The vines haven't flowered yet, but so far, I'm very pleased with the plants.

So fun

I've grown these for several years and find them to be easy and productive. I grow them in heavy black dirt in west-central MN starting in early June. I am able to harvest them right after Labor Day when I want to start decorating for fall/Thanksgiving/Halloween. I raise them just for fun and for my personal decorations so only grow a couple of hills a year. Because they are for personal pleasure, I do keep the unused seeds to use again the next year and have been pleased with the strong germination rate in the older seeds. The pumpkins themselves are probably 20 lbs at harvest and beautiful bright orange. A few are still yellow when I harvest them but they make a nice color contrast in the pile and slowly turn orange throughout the month. The only problem I had this year is either mice, voles or striped gophers ate on several of them, destroying a few and leaving a pattern of teeth marks on others! This is an excellent quality seed and a fun pumpkin to grow.

Cucurbita spp. This traditional ornament of the autumn harvest is good for much more than jack-o-lanterns and pies. High in fiber and essential minerals, their colorful orange flesh signifies an abundance of the antioxidant beta-carotene.

Days to maturity are calculated from date of direct seeding.

Culture
• Pumpkins require uniform irrigation totaling 15-20 inches of water during the growing season
• Bee attractant flowers or beehives will help yields — misshapen or non-developing fruit is often the result of poor pollination

Direct Sowing
• Plant after frost danger when soil warms to 65°F
• Work in shovelful of compost and 1/2 cup TSC's Complete fertilizer into hill
• Keep soil evenly moist but not wet as too much moisture causes seed to rot
• Bush varieties: sow 3-4 feet apart
• Vining varieties: sow 4-5 feet apart

Transplanting
• Start indoors 3-4 weeks prior to anticipated transplant date in 4 inch pots
• Work in shovelful of compost and 1/2 cup TSC's Complete fertilizer into hill
• Transplant carefully as to not disturb roots

Pests & Diseases
• Common pests: Cucumber beetles and squash bugs, stink bugs
• Pest control: Pyrethrin
• Common diseases: Various wilts, leaf spots mildews, and various viral diseases
• Disease prevention: 3-4 year crop rotation, and fungicide applications

Harvest & Storage
• Leave on vine until fully mature, rinds should be firm
• Pumpkins can tolerate a light frost, but must be protected from a hard frost
• Dry gourds: Wash gently in a solution of 10 parts water and 1 part bleach, carefully removing all dirt, then store in a warm, dry location
• Store at 55-70°F and 70% relative humidity
