General
An especially spectacular potted plant, Amaryllis perform best when planted in a deep pot that is no more than 2 inches wider than the bulb so that the plants’ roots will be crowded. Situate the bulb so that the top 1/3 of the bulb is above the soil level. Place the plant in full sun at room temperature (approximately 65-70º F), and water when the soil feels dry to the touch. The amaryllis will bloom 8-10 weeks after planting.
End of Season Care
Once the bloom fades, cut the flower stalk near the soil level, and continue to water the plant as before. Fertilize monthly with an all-purpose houseplant fertilizer. In summer, sink the entire pot in the garden and allow it to grow all season. Bring the potted plant back indoors in September, and begin to withhold water. Allow the foliage to dry out, and store the potted plant in a cool, dark place without water or fertilizer for 8-10 weeks.
