EASTERN PRINCE™

Product Description:

Schisandra chinensis From the mountainous forests of the Far East, we’re excited to offer a limited quantity of this exotic and prolific schisandra. Eastern Prince™ is a self-fertile climbing perennial vine that thrives in colder climates, reaching heights of up to 8 feet. Also known as Magnolia vine or the ‘Five-Flavored’ berry, this ornamental flowering plant is perfect for trellising on arbors, fences, or in container gardens. The large, glossy leaves are slightly serrated, and the waxy, pendulous buds mature into fragrant, cup-shaped flowers that range from white to pale pink. The berries start as bright crimson and dry to a deep, wrinkled oxblood purple, releasing an earthy fragrance reminiscent of dried flowers, while the infusion they make is also a vibrant red. They’re known to be a five flavored fruit: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent—an invigorating taste combo like no other!

Rare and highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine, schisandra has been used for over 4,000 years for its therapeutic benefits. The berries can be dried and stored whole or powdered, and used as a stand-alone tea or combined with other ingredients like ginger, mint, and lemon for a refreshing infusion, served hot or chilled. They can also be soaked in spirits to create a flavorful, vibrant cordial. Hardy in zones 3-8.

Arrived in excellent shape

My Schisandra arrived in excellent shape. None of the potting mix or wood chips had spilled out of the pot. The plant itself looked a tad bit 'limp', but perked right up within a day, and had grown at least an inch within a week!. It came with a very good instructional card, including the unpacking of the plant, when to up-pot it, and when to plant.

The only confusion I have is that the enclosed card specifically says 'No direct sun'. But most other nursery sites say 'full sun'.

Initial Instructions
Upon opening, remove packaging and give your schisandra vine some filtered water from the bottom up. Place in a sunny window to acclimate for a few days. Up-pot into a two-gallon pot for the season and keep well-tended. Plant the vine in its permanent location in the fall or the next spring.

Cultivation
No pruning is needed in the first year. Keep the plant from harsh sun and avoid overwatering. Apply a light, organic, nitrogen fertilizer to encourage growth throughout the active season. After the first year, light pruning in the dormant months will improve fruit production. The vines are prolific, long-lived perennials that will mature to become strong, woody climbers growing up to 8 feet and will need support such as a trellis, fence or canopy.

Size at Maturity
